Artist's StatementI am interested in the decision making process and how much control the artist has over their materials therefore the system of rules that I develop serve to mediate and regulate the image. There is a reciprocal relationship between the chaotic and the ordered and I am interested in the decision-making process and relation between intuition and concept.
I decide on the colours I will use and the process in which I will layer the paint but the outcome is always different because as the paint dries the layers always change order and move in different ways which relinquishes me of the control. |
Over time the paint itself changes and moves around the canvas creating different shapes and forms so documentation of my work is essential. I try to systemize my practice as a way of controlling it but never know the final mark.
My work is more about imbuing paint with behaviours such as leaving or escaping. And there is a visible durational element in that you can see how the paint surface has moved and wrinkled, either through gravity or by myself physically massaging and squeezing it. |
